PDF to Word

Get the words out of a PDF and into a Word document you can edit. It is the text that comes across, not the design, and it happens in your browser, so the file never leaves your device.

Runs entirely in your browser

Your file stays on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to convert PDF to Word

  1. Drop the PDF onto the box above, or press “Choose a PDF file”.
  2. Wait while the text is read. The .docx file downloads by itself when it is ready.
  3. Open it in Word, Google Docs or LibreOffice. You get the text to edit, not the original layout or images.

What PDF to Word does

Getting the words out of a PDF and into something you can edit in Word. It copies the text across, one paragraph at a time. What it does not do is rebuild the document: the layout, the images and the fonts stay behind, so what you open is your writing rather than your design. If you have been sent a report and need to quote half of it, this is the fast way. If you need the report to look like the report, this is not.

What it does

  • Puts the text of every page into a real .docx that Word, Google Docs and LibreOffice all open
  • Keeps paragraphs apart, so it reads the way the document reads
  • Says so plainly when a PDF is a scan and has no text to take, instead of handing you an empty file

What it does not do

  • Reproduce the layout (no columns, tables, headers, footers or page breaks)
  • Bring images, logos or charts across; only the words come
  • Keep fonts, sizes, bold or colour, because none of that survives the trip
  • Read scanned pages, which are pictures of words rather than words and need OCR

Need to send this to someone?

Our sister site QRSansar hosts a document and gives you a short link and a QR code for it. That is handy for WhatsApp, a slide, a poster or a printed handout, and it avoids attachment size limits entirely. You can swap the file later and the link and QR code keep working.

Worth being clear about the difference: that is a hosting service, so your file is uploaded to it. Everything on PDFsansar stays on your device; sharing is the one job that cannot.

PDF to Word: common questions

Will it look like the original?

No, and it is worth being clear about that before you start. You get the words, in order, as paragraphs. The columns, tables, images, fonts and page layout do not come with them. Acrobat charges for the version that rebuilds the design, and it is genuinely hard; this is the free version of the job, which is getting the text somewhere you can edit it.

Why did I get an empty document?

You should not have. The tool refuses instead. If your PDF is a scan or a photo of a page, the words in it are pixels rather than characters, so there is nothing to copy out. Reading those needs OCR, which this tool does not do; run the file through OCR PDF first and it will work here.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No. The PDF is read and the Word file is written in your browser, on your device. Nothing is sent to us or to anyone else, which you can check by switching off your wi-fi and using it anyway.

Can I edit the result?

Yes. It is an ordinary .docx, so Word, Google Docs, LibreOffice and Pages all open it and let you type.
